On March 8th, St. Louis Street residents met at the Madison County Historic Society (MCHS) Museum and Archives Library to research the history of their homes and properties.  Guests were treated to a personal tour of the Museum from director Suzanne Dietrich followed by an informational tour of the available archives.  Volunteers were on hand to help each participant uncover relevant details on their homes and previous inhabitants including photos, maps and more.

MCHS had conducted a pre-exploration on each guest's home prior to the event.  Each received a copy of the original land grant documents from the 1800s and were provided with  general details of the street including its original name FAIRGROUNDS ROAD (circa 1894).
The group discovered that many of their homes were linked to one another through family association like the Hadleys, the Wests, the Stolzes, the Gerkes, and the Bairds, the Burroughs, the Tunnels and The Mudge Family.

Participants were impressed with the list of accomplished individuals who called our street home...prominent business and political figures,,  judges, doctors, lawyers, civil war veterans and WWII heroes.  However, the most memorable highlights of the afternoon were the stories of the everyday living of yesteryear like the front porch wedding, the backyard barbeques, the evening serenading strolls, the stories of childhood pranks and general community spirit.

HSSA Members associated with the event were very pleased with comments from the guest citing how impressed they were with the ease, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff at MCHS with most stating that they plan to return on their own to continue their investigations into their home's history.
